Pirelli Rally ended ... | 27-07-2001
Fourth leg of Turkey Rally Champ. 22nd Pirelli Rally run between 27-28 July 2001 in Istanbul. It was organised by Istanbul Auto Club and was tough. It consisted of three special laps: Binkiliç-12.1 km., Yaliköy- 7.7 km and Soguksu-10.75 km. Each lap was toured three times and the total was 91.65 km.
61 teams enrolled in the rally started off Holiday Inn Marina. Opel Motor Sport participated with two cars: Hamdi Ünal - Çaglar Süren in Opel Corsa Maxi Kitcar and Yilmaz Köprücü-Feridun Inak in Astra G Kitcar.
Race began on 28 July, Saturday. Binkiliç special lap was run by Yilmaz Köprücü-Feridun Inak quickly until they could not avoid a stone after a very tight bend and they damaged Astra but they reached the finish slowly. Not to cause further damage, they quit the race.
Hamdi Ünal-Ça_lar Süren did not force Opel Corsa as usual in the first lap. In Yaliköy lap for 7.7 km., they were faster and 8 seconds behind Ali Deveci and 7 seconds ahead of Nejat Avci. But things changed in the first loop of the last Soguksu lap. Ali Deveci lost control of Punto Kitcar, spun and was off road. He had to quit the race in spite of all efforts to make him return to the road.
