Hamdi Ünal-Çaİlar Süren team won their first general classification | 17-07-2002
Opel Motor Sport pilots, Hamdi Ünal-Çaglar Süren team in Astra Kit Car,never giving up the struggle, won their first general classification, in spite of the unluckiness endured in the 27th Green Bursa Rally. Team gaining valuable points to continue their pursuit in the championship, also joined the fight in F2 class.
Team, having to deal with unluckiness since the beginning of the season, started exercises for the rally 4 days in advance. After a fairly amusing and successful exercise programme, the team and technical staff making adjustments to the car to win the race, started off to overcome the unluckiness encountered in Pirelli Rally..
Special lap, Nilüfer, cancelled due to poor condition of the ground, the start for Green Bursa Rally was given on Saturday and the special lap was run as normal lap. On that normal lap, Ercan Kazaz-Cem Balkançocuklari team came 11 mins. late to service entrance and thus one opponent team was off the top. With the start given on Sunday, Hamdi Ünal-Çaİlar Süren team entered KurŞunlu lap and became very worried about the humidity and morning mist and they were right to worry. With the start of KurŞunlu lap, the team decided to race in a very fast tempo and towards mid-lap, fell into left-hand side shoulder with Astra. Trying to come up, they bumped into a rock in the grass. When they were back on the road, presuming the car was less damaged than expected, they continued towards the end of the lap. But they realised that all the adjustments of Astra was off and the car not responding. Still, they had to carry on purely with their own skills and efforts. At the finish of KurŞunlu lap, Hamdi Ünal trying to get off the car to see the damage, could not open his door and our co-pilot, Çaİlar Süren, found it difficult to explain to him that there was no door to open. In spite of the damages in Astra Kit Car, the team never gave up. And the strongest opponent, Volkan IŞ!k was only 1 second ahead of the OMS team.
On the second lap, on DemirtaŞ start, Hamdi Ünal-Çaglar Süren, began the race aiming to make the best time without reducing tempo and maintaining the car on the road. Our team was ahead of Volkan IŞ!k by 5 seconds on this lap and achieved an advantage.
There was a surprise for our team on the third lap, AİlaŞan. Due to the damages of the first lap, front-left wheel was inwards and rear-left wheel was outwards. Because of this, Astra had no difficulty in turning to right, it even tried to turn by itself. Towards mid-lap, on a sharp right-bend, our pilot Hamdi Ünal, lost control of the car and had a hard time when spinning a half turn. Our team, trying hard to get back to the road because of narrowness, had to lose 15 seconds. To prevent further delay, our team slowed down the tempo and when they came to finish, OMS team was 23 seconds behind of Volkan IŞ!k.
On the fourth lap, Gölcük, they were only 2 seconds behind of Volkan IŞ!k although the teams tempo was fairly slow. The car entering the first service was put back to previous adjustments by the spectacular endeavors of the technical staff. On the second lap, our team had only been 21 seconds behind of Volkan IŞ!k. Thats why they had to gain 21 seconds on the 6th lap. Our team director had ordered attack on the second run of KurŞunlu. With this order in mind, our team exhibited a good fight and they were ahead of Volkan IŞ!k when they finished the lap. At the end of the same lap, 6th gear of IŞ!ks Punto was stuck. Our team decided to go another lap in fast tempo and started.
On this second lap, our team caught IŞ!k and when they came to finish they also made the best time. Going on the third lap, IŞ!k discontinued the race.With Ercan Kazazs time penalty and Celal Gülerhans being almost a minute behind, our team decided to slow down the tempo and carried on cleverly and cautiously. When Opel team entered the second service of the day, they were the first in general classification and time difference was fairly great with the second. There were only two laps left to days end.
In the last two laps, our team raced in controlled and fast tempo and completed the special laps of 27th YeŞil Bursa Rally with a "best time" and a "same time" and returned to the service area as the winner of the race. Opel pilots Hamdi Ünal and Çaglar Süren were unbelievably happy about their first general
classification winning.
And we stood there enjoying the ceremonies upon our staffs and teams getting these points in the 27th YeŞil Bursa Rally. Returning as the winner of the general classification of YeŞil Bursa Rally, made the whole team happy.
